When Libre Gutierrez was growing up, there were no art schools in his home town of Tijuana. Knowing it would please his mother, he enrolled in college to study architecture after he finished high school. As soon as he graduated, though, he moved to Mexico City to pursue his true passion: painting. He has painted murals all around the world but the influence of growing up in a border town is still very much present in his work.
We visited libre in his studio in downtown Mexico City, where he told us about what it was like making the move from Tijuana to Mexico’s capital, and how growing up along the U.S.-Mexico border influences his artwork to this day.
